Overview

PALEOKASTRITSA, LAKONES PANORAMA

& CORFU TOWN

This tour begins with a scenic drive through the wonderful Corfiot countryside, full of
olive groves, pine, cypress, lemon, and orange trees. Approximately 25 minutes later,
you arrive at one of the most beautiful spots on the island, the bay of Paleokastritsa,
called the “Capri of Greece”.
Once there, you visit the Byzantine Monastery of the Virgin – still inhabited by a
community of monks – and its small museum, housing a unique collection of
Byzantine icons and church relics. From the Monastery gardens, you can admire
breathtaking views over the beautiful bays of Paleokastritsa below, with their crystal-
clear waters and rocky promontories.
According to local myth, in one of these bays, the legendary Odysseus met the
beautiful local Princess Nausicaa after his shipwreck. On the opposite hill, you can
see the Byzantine Fort of Angelokastro, perched high on a rocky pillar rising a
thousand feet from the sea, built in the 13th century by the Despot of Epiros Michael
Komninos.
The tour then continues to the picturesque traditional village of Lakones, situated high
up the mountain slopes, from where you can enjoy a panoramic vista over the whole
bay of Paleokastritsa. Following a short photo-stop for some great pictures, your
coach takes the road back to the Old Town of Corfu.
Your next stop will be at the village of Makrades, where you will have the chance to
wander around in the small narrow streets of the village and admire the life of a village.
On arrival at Esplanade Square – the central square – you leave your coach for a
walking guided tour around the historic center of Old Corfu Town. Wandering in its
maze of winding narrow cobbled streets known as ‘kandounia’ you explore some of
the most elegant quarters of this Venetian-built town. You visit the 300-year old
Church of the Patron St Spiridon with its priceless collection of icons and offering to
the resident Patron Saint of the Island. You also have some free time for shopping and
wandering around town on your own before getting back on your coach for your
return transfer back to your ship at the port.

Duration: Minimum 4 hours.
Advice to Clients: Bring your camera, lots of films and wear light shoes. Please note that
revealing clothing (short pants and blouses without sleeves) is not
allowed in monasteries and churches.
